Visit Peebles - The Royal Burgh

The Northgate

Northgate, Peebles

Originally the Northerly entrance into the town.

Like some of the older buildings on the High Street ( as viewed from the Tweed bridge ) the original style of the older buildings on the west side of the Northgate have vertical walled gable ends facing the street, and their rigs and closes running down to the Eddleston water.

You can also observe sets of initials carved on stone lintels over some entrance doors - these are old 'marriage lintels' which denote the initials of the couple who first lived there on their marriage.
